What to expect: international student application
The big picture: applying to NAU
Here’s a quick look at the journey ahead:
1. Choose your program and apply online
Find the right undergraduate or graduate program, then complete your application through NAU’s international portal. Most applications take 30–45 minutes.
2. Submit your documents
You’ll need to upload:
- Official transcripts
- Proof of English proficiency
- A copy of your passport
- Proof of financial support
- Additional materials depending on your program (like a personal statement or letters of recommendation)
3. Accept your offer and pay enrollment fee
Once admitted, confirm your spot at NAU by accepting your offer and paying the $325 enrollment fee. This step unlocks your access to housing, orientation, and visa documents.
4. Receive your I-20 and apply for a visa
Once we confirm your enrollment and financial documents, you’ll receive your I-20 form. Use this to apply for your F-1 student visa and schedule your interview at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate.
5. Get ready to join NAU!
After your visa is approved, you’ll be able to plan your travel, attend onboarding, and start preparing for life in Flagstaff, Arizona. Our International Student and Scholar Services team will help you with housing, health insurance, cultural support, and everything in between.
Timeline at a glance
While deadlines may vary by program—especially for graduate degrees—international students should plan ahead to leave enough time for admission, visa processing, and travel.
For undergraduate students
- Recommended application window: We recommend applying at least 4-6 months before your intended start date. (Example: apply by March for a fall semester start in August)
- I-20 and visa processing: The processing begins after you’ve been admitted and submit your proof of financial support. This process can take several weeks to months depending on your location.
- NAU onboarding: This takes place 1-2 weeks before classes begin. Attendance is required for F-1 visa students.
For graduate students
- Start the application process early: Transcripts, test scores, and letters of recommendation can take time to collect and verify. Give yourself plenty of time to gather materials.
- Deadlines vary by program: Many require applications to be submitted by January-March for fall admission. Always check with your department.
