What to expect: graduate student application

It’s time to take your knowledge, career, and impact even further. With more than 90 graduate degree and certificate programs across disciplines, NAU offers a supportive, research-driven, and flexible environment to help you reach your goals. We know graduate students often juggle busy schedules, so we’ve made our application process simple and transparent.

The big picture: applying to NAU graduate school

Here’s what you can expect from application to enrollment.

1. Choose your program and apply online

Start by finding the right master’s, doctoral, or certificate program. Each program has its own admissions criteria and materials, and most applications take 30–45 minutes to complete.

2. Submit required documents

You’ll likely need to upload transcripts, a statement of purpose, a resume or CV, and letters of recommendation. Some programs may also require test scores (GRE, GMAT, etc.).

To determine if your degree program has additional admission requirements, find degree information in the Academic Catalog or contact the specific academic program.

3. Monitor your application status

After applying, you’ll receive a user ID to check your application portal for updates, outstanding materials, and your admission decision.

4. Accept your offer and submit your enrollment fee

Once admitted, accept your offer and submit your $325 enrollment fee to secure your spot.

5. Apply for financial aid, assistantships, or fellowships

Eligible graduate students can submit the FAFSA (NAU code: 001082) and explore funding options such as graduate assistantships, research fellowships, and departmental scholarships.

6. Prepare for your first semester

Once enrolled, you’ll meet with your advisor, register for courses, and complete onboarding steps to get you ready for success.

Timeline at a glance

  • Deadlines vary by programs: apply early for the best chances at admission and funding
  • FAFSA opens October 1: required for many forms of aid
  • Most programs admit for fall, but some also for spring or summer: check individual program pages for specifics
