Health and wellness

Taking good care of yourself is easy at NAU. We have programs dedicated to all aspects of your health and wellness—in person, and online.

On-campus healthcare is available and provided by Campus Health Services (CHS). All enrolled Flagstaff students who pay the health and wellness fee have access to CHS.

Campus Health Services

Located in the Health and Learning Center (HLC), CHS is available to students, faculty, and staff for primary medical care, mental health services, and prevention resources. Through CHS, you may schedule appointments with doctors and nurse practitioners, visit urgent care, request lab work, and access mental health services and counselors. In addition, CHS also offers immunizations (such as flu shots), nutrition counseling, physical therapy, and allergy clinic testing. Counseling and psychiatric services are available in-person or via telehealth.

Primary care

Primary care services are available for students, faculty, staff, and eligible dependents 16 years and older. Our team of physicians and nurse practitioners are uniquely qualified to attend to your wellness and preventive health needs, and manage a variety of chronic diseases. If specialty care is needed, we will refer to an outside provider.

Urgent Care Clinic

The Nurse Triage call line is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.–5 p.m. The triage nurses are available by phone to answer questions, offer medical advice, and escalate care as needed.

If you prefer a walk-in appointment, Urgent Care visits will be triaged on-site through a registered nurse and appropriately scheduled.

Immunizations

At NAU, we’re committed to keeping our campus community safe, healthy, and strong. Because students live and learn in close-knit environments in the living communities, classrooms, and dining spaces, staying up to date on vaccinations is an important way to protect yourself and those around you.

That’s why NAU requires all Flagstaff mountain campus students (born after 1956) to provide proof of immunization or immunity to measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR). We also follow the recommendations of the CDC and American College Health Association to encourage students to be current on other key vaccines for a safer college experience.

Required immunizations

  • Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR)

To safeguard the health of the NAU population, all new and transfer students are required to provide proof of immunity to MMR.

Before a student can register, they are required to show proof of MMR vaccinations or a lab test showing proof of immunity. You may obtain a copy of an official immunization record from your health care provider, health department, high school, or previous university.

Students born prior to 1957 are exempt from this requirement, as are NAU students not attending the Flagstaff mountain campus.

NAU required vaccinations FAQ

How do I submit my MMR documentation?

After you have applied and accepted your admission to NAU, go to the Campus Health Portal and enter your NAU credentials. Select “Required Forms,” followed by “Immunization Records.” You will need to upload scans of your MMR documentation. Alternatively, you may drop off your documentation in person at the CHS office in the HLC (Bldg. 25)

I have received the MMR vaccine, but I don’t have documentation. What do I do?

Your healthcare provider can order an MMR blood titer to check your status and you may submit the results. If the test shows that you do not have immunity, you must get the MMR vaccine.

Can I get the MMR vaccination from CHS?

Yes, the MMR vaccine is available by appointment for a fee from CHS. The vaccination consists of two shots that must be given at least 28 days apart. Students who have received the first shot are eligible for a temporary immunization hold override to allow them to enroll and attend classes while waiting to receive the second shot. The immunization hold will be reimposed if a student fails to receive the second MMR immunization shot.

Recommended immunizations

  • T-dap
  • Meningococcal vaccine
  • HPV: Human Papillomavirus
  • Influenza vaccine
  • COVID-19

All of these vaccines, as well as many others, are available by appointment at CHS.

Physical therapy services are available throughout the academic year. Quality, personalized care that combines exercises and stretches are used to restore function, relieve pain, and promote general well-being.

Nutrition services

Nutrition counseling at NAU offers one-on-one individualized sessions to address a multitude of nutrition concerns. This service is available to students, faculty and staff. Services include: Eating disorders/disordered eating concerns, medical nutrition therapy, food allergies/intolerances, gastrointestinal issues/gut health, and navigating healthy eating on and off campus.

Insurance coverage

Every enrolled student is welcome to receive care at CHS regardless of insurance coverage. We are mindful of maintaining affordability and accessibility for all of our students.

There are fees, such as the Health and Wellness Fee, associated with services received at CHS. While insurance is not required, students are strongly encouraged to have some form of health insurance while at NAU. There are several options available for students to cover fees.

Plans:

LouieCare

LouieCare is a discounted health plan for services at the Flagstaff campus, and is a great option for students who have a high deductible or students who have an insurance plan that CHS is not contracted with.

Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP)

Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) is offered as an affordable UnitedHealthCare PPO medical plan. The plan is designed to provide group coverage to students who are currently uninsured, need a less expensive alternative, or need an Arizona provider network.

Your own contracted insurance

NAU CHS is also a contracted provider with PPO plans with Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, Cigna, United Healthcare and Tricare Select/Standard. If a student has one of these plans, CHS can directly bill the insurance. We are currently not contracted with any state Medicaid plans, including AHCCCS plans.
