How to apply for housing
Take the first step in your housing journey! We’re excited to have you on campus. Follow this quick guide to get started with your housing application and finding a roommate.
Things to consider when applying
Know your deadlines
The housing application for the 2025–26 academic year (Aug 2025–May 2026) is currently open.
- Housing preferences – opened November 2024
- Roommate search and selection – opened January 2025
- Room selection – began February/March 2025
- The sooner you apply, the better your chances. Room selection kicks off in early 2025 and happens on a rolling basis through June, depending on when you applied and what’s still available. Don’t wait too long if you’ve got your eye on a certain spot!
When housing applications open, a lot of people log in at once. If the portal is slow or says it’s busy, please try again later. Thanks for your patience.

Follow these steps to apply for NAU housing
1. Apply and accept your offer of admission
We’re excited you’re considering living on campus. If you have yet to apply and accept your offer of NAU admission, now is a good time to do so.
2. Pay your enrollment deposit
Once you’ve taken the first step and paid your enrollment deposit, you’ll be able to begin your housing journey!
3. Log into the housing portal
Within a few days after accepting your offer of admission, you’ll be issued an NAU user ID and password. These are the credentials you’ll need to get into the housing portal.
Heads up: If you get a login error, your enrollment fee is still being processed. Try again the next day.
4. Fill out the questionnaire and explore roommate and housing options!
Once you’ve successfully logged into the housing portal, you’ll be able to dive into your roommate search and making room selections. Below are a few things to be aware of as you’re navigating the housing portal.
For each academic year (August–May), roommate search opens the January prior.
Questionnaire
When you fill out your housing application, you’ll answer a few questions to help match you with potential roommates. You can also write a short bio to share your interests, hobbies, and what you’re looking for in a roommate—it’s a great way to help others get to know you.
Once roommate matching opens, you’ll be able to search for and request roommates in a few different ways:
- Browse your top matches based on how you answered the questionnaire
- Search by specific questions—like if you care about sleeping habits or room cleanliness
- Find people in your major who have similar answers
- Search by name if you already know someone and want to live with them (you’ll need their NAU UserID)
You can check out people’s profiles to see their bios and what college they’re in. If you want to room with someone, just send a request—and make sure they accept it before room selection starts, so you can choose a room together.
Optional: You don’t have to pick a roommate. If you don’t, no worries—someone else will either select the open spot in your room or be placed there by the system.
Roommate groups
If you want to live with friends (or people you’ve found through the roommate search), you can create a roommate group through the housing app. As soon as you invite someone, a group is automatically created.
Things to know about groups:
- Groups can have 2 to 4 people total, and you can only be in one group at a time.
- The person who sends the invite becomes the group leader.
- Anyone who accepts the invite becomes a group member.
Pending invites
When you’re reviewing roommate invites, you might see a couple of things:
- Pending incoming requests = people who invited you to their group (you’ll need to accept or decline).
- Pending outgoing requests = people you or someone in your group invited (waiting on their response).
Leaving a group
Changed your mind or want to join a different group? You’ll need to leave your current group first. You can’t join or be invited to a new one until you do.
If you’re the group leader, you’ll need to assign someone else as the leader before you leave the group.
Selecting a room
Joining a roommate group means you’re asking to live together, but it’s not guaranteed. It all depends on what’s available when it’s time to pick your room.
Here’s how it works and some things to keep in mind:
- Any group member can choose rooms for the group during selection.
- Whoever has the earliest room selection time should do it (more options = better chance to stick together).
- The person selecting should place themselves first, then assign group members to fill the space (like two people in a two-person apartment).
- You can’t add roommates later if you already picked a room without them.
- Talk with your group ahead of time about backup options, just in case your top choice isn’t available when your time slot opens.
